Rising Star: Eddy Young

Comedy+ Magazine presents to you Ameh Eddy Joshua fondly called Eddy Young, a native of Benue State.

Personality of the week: ONYEKA ONWENU

Legends are people who in time past made memorable remark, impact lives and brought joy to the society.

Today, in the entertainment industry, Comedy + celebrate a legend, a woman of substance and an elegant stallion, Onyeka Onwenu.
Madam Onyeka Onwenu, born on May 17, 1961 is a Nigerian singer, actress and politician,journalist, and X Factor series judge.

Her early childhood education started in Nigeria, after which she moved over to the United States where she studied in the Wellesley College Massachusetts and in 1977-79 was appointed a staff of the public information to the United Nations.
She worked for many years at the United Nations in New York before returning to Nigeria in 1980, where she completed the mandatory one-year National Service, at the NTA where she made an impact as an articulate, incisive and fearless reporter. In 1984.

Onwenu's career in music started in early 1981 while still working with the NTA, releasing the album "For the Love of You". Originally a secular artist, she now sings mainly gospel music, and continues to write and sing about issues such as health (HIV/AIDS), peace and mutual coexistence, respect for women rights and the plight of children. Her latest effort titled, "Inspiration for Change," focuses on the need for an attitudinal turn around in Nigeria.

She has also featured in numerous Nollywood movies and in 2006 won the African Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, In 2014, she was in the movie Half of a Yellow Sun with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandie Newton.

In 2013, she was named as one of the three judges on the Nigerian version of The X Factor. In recognition of her contribution to music and arts in Nigeria, she has been celebrated by professionals like Mahmood Ali-Balogun, Laolu Akins and others.

Through her music Onyeka, has enthused unparalleled patriotism, preached, peace, love and tolerance. She has bagged several awards, many including the best pop artiste, a certificate of appreciation from the United States Aid 1989, a global media awards population institute award, Pan African arts and music award and many more.

Home Politics

Considering the lackadaisical attitude of 21st century parents/guardians towards  attitude of the kids in our society, one might be forced to loudly say that “there will be no better future leaders in our society"
Home politics, at an adolescent stage is a stage where teenagers/adolescents tends to compete with one another in their homes. At this stage, they see everyone within their age grade in the home as their competitor and then actively perform their duties competitively to attract attention of their parents, siblings and every other person involved, all to themselves. In some cases, this habit leads them into fighting, lying, impersonating, pretending and even giving an extreme show of some good behavior just to be considered as the best or favorite child in the family.
At times you will discover that they do not only exhibit these attitudes in their homes alone, but also in public places which if not checked properly, will someday be a threat to the society.
Taking a close view of what happens in the family today, will leave you with no option than to believe in the general myth that the girls in the family especially the first daughters are loved more by their fathers than any other child in the family, that the boys are closer to their mother, the last child is protected more than any other child in the family, and that there tends to be a certain rate of competition which might be tag “survival of the fittest” among the first and the second children. Sometimes, we end up believing in these myths when things go wrong or right in our family.
 In most cases, the rivalry between siblings in the family, leads to the destruction of family ties which is not considered healthy among young people.
Therefore, parents/guidance is advice to carefully examine their kids, knowing this unhealthy competition, “Home Politics” among children is nothing but a sign of weakness and low self esteem. While examining them, parents/guidance should strategically instruct and teach them on the steps to resolving home politics as well as avoiding issues that will lead to it.
Parent/guidance on the other hand should endeavor to treat their kids equally, in as much as it is believed that kids can only be loved base on their character traits.
Lastly, parent/guidance should avoid giving the impression that one child is preferred to the other so as to avoid home politics.
By so doing, “Home Politics” if not eradicated, will be reduced in our society

The comedy industry is filled with potential comedians whose unique style of jokes differentiate one from another. Bovi Ugboma, is one of  Nigerian comedian whose intelligent and political style of jokes has been making waves and this stands him out as a unique act to watch and listen to anytime. Bovi Ugboma's career  began  in April 2007, starring in the sitcom Extend Family, which he produced, wrote, and packaged. The show was very popular and by 2008, Bovi was leading comedy shows and events throughout Nigeria. He participated in Nite of 1000 Laughs organized by Opa Williams. Bovi has worked alongside other Nigerian comedians such as I Go Dye, I Go Save, Basketmouth, Buchi, Okey Bakassi, Julius Agwu and others. He has featured in almost all the big comedy concerts in Nigeria and a host of others outside the shores of Nigeria.

Currently he is the CEO of Kountry Kulture Networks Ltd, a production house with bias for television, film and events. He was also said to be among the Top ten best and most Funny Nigerian comedians.Bovi has won several awards such as; Ghana comedian of the year, Standup Comedians Award, Best Youth Comedian, and more. Personality of the week: STEPHANIE OKEREKE LINUS

Modeling, Acting and Movie directing has become a trend  in the industry that those with the ability to multi task earn hugely for their hard work. Stephanie Okereke Linus is one of Naija screen diva who is endowed with this ability. Mrs. Linus known as Stephanie Okereke, was born on the 2nd of  October 1982. She is a Nigerian actress, film director and model. Her appearance in Nollywood movies started  in 1997 with “Compromise II” and then featured in “Waterloo”. A year later she gained admission to study  English and Literary studies  at the University of Calabar which she  pursued, putting acting on hold. It just did not  end there,  a year later Nollywood came calling again and Stephanie could not resist, she fed her desire to act with Teco Benson’s “Terror”.
During the 2002 Most beautiful girl in Nigeria beauty pageant Okereke reached 2nd place. A year later in 2003, Okereke received two awards at the 2003 Reel Awards for 'Best Actress - English' and 'Best Actress of the year 2003'.

With determination and creative endowment, Okereke established her Production company “Next Page Productions".  Adding more titles to her portfolio,  Okereke released the movie "Through the Glass", in which she served as director, scriptwriter, producer and actress. The film received an Africa Movie Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay in 2009. Stephanie  has received several awards and nominations for what she is known for. As an actress, she received the 2003 Reel Award for Best Actress, the 2006 Afro Hollywood Award for Best Actress, and three nominations for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2005, 2009 and 2010. 

In 2011, she was honoured by the Nigerian government with a National honour (Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR). Presently,  Okereke is married to  Linus Idahosa

Back in the days, On-Air-Personalities (OAPs) were not popular like their television counterparts, only their voices and names were known to the people. But today, some radio presenters are well known and even compete with celebrities.

Here, are two Naija on air personalities whose voices, faces and names rings across the nation.

Toke Makinwa
Toke was born on the 3rd day of November 1984. She is a Nigerian radio personality, television host, and blogger.
Makinwa is known for co-hosting the Morning Drive on Rhythm 93.7 FM and host of several other public functions.
She is arguably one of the most controversial OAPs in Nigeria.
In 2010, she hosted the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria beauty pageant, she became the ambassador of the United Africa company of Nigeria alongside Osas Ighodaro, Dare Art Alade and Dan Foster.
Toke has been nominated and won several awards like; On Air Personality of the Year (Radio), Entertainment Personality of the Year and more.

Ikponmwosa Osakioduwa

Ikponmwosa Osakioduwa, popularly known as IK, was born on 21st of May 1979. He is a Nigerian radio and television personality whose unique voice and charisma is currently making weaves for.
IK, was known for his work with Rhythm 93.7 FM, he was also a presenter for several shows on MNET such as Studio 53, Temptation Nigeria and Comedy Club: Live in Lagos.

After several massive auditions conducted by MNet all over Africa in search of the perfect host for the No.1 Africa reality show, “Big Brother Africa”, IK Osakioduwa emerged as the best host for the show, a show he gave his best to and made his own.

In total, IK has hosted 3 out of the 6 editions of the show, a record which no one has topped. He is regarded as one of Africa’s finest and skillful presenters.

I dropped my Challenges in Ibadan - Mc HondaStevo

"To whom WASH is given, BLUSH is expected but I no go BLUSH cos I know say na WASH", is the popular slang of one of our own Nigerian MC and a rising comedian, Akinfolurin Oluwatayo Stephen popularly known as HONDASTEVO. HONDASTEVO, born in the mid 1980's and 1990's as the 7th but last child to the family of Late Pastor Solomon Adetayo Akinfolurin of blessed memory. Stephen is a devoted Christian who speaks English, Yoruba & Pidgin fluently. He is a  tested and trusted master of ceremony per excellence, a comedian, compere, event planner, OAP, TV host,Kiddies entertainer and lots more. MC HONDASTEVO,  hails from Ode Erinje in Okitipupa LGA of Ondo state. This comic dude started basically in 2007 as Mr Clown for kiddies events where he brings life and laughter  to kiddies birthday parties, school parties, carols and more.
Formally and officially in 2012, he had his first stage appearance as a stand up comedian in Akure while his business grew better till date. This young man has been sighted in major events in Ondo state ranging from kiddies parties, kiddies/adult birthday parties, club shows, weddings, musical concerts, comedy shows and lots more. He is a creative & competent comedian that even the dogs in Ondo state knows him well. Stevo, in an interview with Comedy+ Magazine revealed how long he's been on stage, how he came about, his stage name "Hondastevo" and more.

How long have you been in the comedy and MC business?

Unofficially 8yrs and officially 3yrs

How do you combine the two, comedy and MC?

Just like an actor who acts tragedy and comedy movie effectively, same goes for me. I'm formal when I'm the MC of an event but crazy while cracking jokes on stage. It's just being serious or formal now then activating the naughty part of me later

How did you come about your stage name, Hondastevo?

Stevo was cropped from my other name (Steve) while Honda happened to be my favorite car back then when I started o. In short, I was formerly HONDASTEVO meaning STEVO that likes HONDA car & now I'm HONDASTEVO meaning STEVO that drives/uses HONDA car

You live in Akure, and work in Lagos, is it not stressful, and does it mean there are no big pay opportunities in akure?

That's not stress since money is involved. I've never seen that as stress but if you call it stress, then I want to be stressed. Just as Davido sang,  "owo ni koko". There are but Lagos is a commercial city. My tentacle must expand, Nobody prays to die as a local champion.

Your profile says you started as Mr Clown for kiddes' birthday parties, do you still do that?

Sigh(HmMm) kiddies birthday parties most times are on Saturdays while weddings too are on Saturdays. Since 2012 now, I prefer anchoring a wedding on saturday to kiddies party but the amazing part of it is, I still do the two. How??? I have close to 35boys who works as Mr Clown, some wear my cartoon costumes e.g Ben10, Barney, Spider-Man, avatar e.t.c some at my pop corn stand in parties, candy floss, castles and all. So, I send my men to the kiddies event & I handle the weddings. You are an MC and a Comedian, which among this two brings more pay?

The crazy part brings in more money and that's COMEDY. And it's when the craze is intertwined/incorporated into being an MC that the pay becomes WOW

Steve, as a rising comedian, what has been  your major challengies?

I've dropped off all my challenges  at challenge bus stop in ibadan. No regrets, no challenge because God has been helping the small me.

Nigeria Entertainment AWARD 2015

Kiss Daniel, Simi, DJ Cuppy, Yemi Alade, Praiz are among other talented Nigerian artistes who won the Nigerian Entertainment Awards (NEA) held at the Skirball Center For The Performing Arts, New York.

In deed, it was a glamorous event as many Nollywood celebrities and other artistes who where at the occasion joined in celebration of victory of their friends and colleague.

Personality of the week: PHYNO

Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, popularly known as Phyno  is an  Igbo-speaking rapper/producer whose passion and hard work moved from ‘underground hype’ to a household name in Nigeria. Nelson was born and raised in Enugu State. His stage name Phyno, which is derived from the word phenomenal (the nickname given to him by one of his high school friends). He started up as a producer in 2003. Having produced for the likes of Timaya, Flavour, Ruggedman, 2Shotz, Bracket, J Martins and Mr. Raw, Phyno found his way around the industry and decided to move to Lagos in 2007 so as to increase his impact.

While in Lagos, Phyno started making his mark in Nigerian Hip-Hop back in late September 2012, he released "Ghost Mode" as the album's lead single.The song features Olamide and was released to critical acclaim. It won Best Collabo at both the 2012 The Headies Awards and 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. The music video for "Ghost Mode" was released on 7 December 2012. It was shot and directed in Lagos by Clarence Peters. Since  then, his stock has been rising steadily for Phyno. On 31 August 2014, Thisday reported that Phyno became an ambassador of Guinness Nigeria's Made of Black campaign alongside Olamide and Eva Alordiah. Phyno performed at the campaign's launch and was featured in the campaign's television commercial. Azubuike, as an artist has performed in Notable events and places.

In June 2013, Phyno performed for 25 minutes in Owerri as part of the Star Music Trek tour. Phyno toured with D'banj, Burna Boy, Chidinma, Vector, Pucado, Seyi Shay, Show Dem Camp, Kay Switch and Sean Tizzle as a supporting act on the Hennessy Artistry 2013 Club Tour. In April 2014, he performed at the 2014 edition of the Star Music Trek tour in Nsukka, Enugu State. Phyno, in no doubt has  been nominated and won for himself numerous notable  awards like;  Rap Artiste of the Year, Best Collabo of the Year and other Nigerian Entertainment Awards.

Outstanding OAPs II

Last week we started profiling your Naija outstanding On Air Personalities whose names ring across the continent. This week, we unveil another two whose performances, uniqueness and hard work speaks for.

Daniel ‘Dan’ Foster 

Popularly known as 'Big Dawg' is a Nigerian-based American radio presenter. He is a graduate of Broadcasting and Drama. Foster was brought up with his three siblings in Washington D.C. by their father. Foster according to his biography, has worked with numerous radio stations in  America before moving to Nigeria in 2000 where he joined Cool FM Lagos family. In 2001, he  featured in the Nollywood movie “Face of a Liar”. A year later, he became popular with Nigerian radio listeners which granted him  an award for Best Radio Presenter of the year. He also won the 2003, 2004, and 2005 Nigeria Media Merit Awards for 'Best Radio Personality'.

Dan has also been honoured and recognized by the City People Awards: a respected organization known for recognizing outstanding individuals who have touched the lives of citizens in the community, they have named him “Media Person of the year” in 2004 and again in 2005. Dan Foster in  2007,  was a judge on the  Idols West Africa series, alongside Nigerian Dede Mabiaku and others. He is currently a judge on Nigeria's Got Talent alongside actress Kate Henshaw and comedian Yibo Koko.

Olisa Adibua 

Olisa is one of the most respected on air personalities in Nigeria and Africa at large.  With over 23 years experience in television, radio, film, and live events, he has  been at the cutting edge of African electronic media and entertainment since 1988. His career in media started back in the days with the Nigeria Television Authority(NTA) as an independent presenter, producer and director on popular magazine/light entertainment programmes like; ‘Tops of the pops’ and ‘Super sounds’. He has had a long and fruitful association with corporate Nigeria both as a spokesperson and on various platforms 

Adibua Olisa hosted the number one afternoon drive time radio show on 96.9 Cool FM till he moved in 2009 to launch the current No. 1 radio station in Nigeria, THE BEAT 99.9FM, as the morning drive-time host and Programme Director, a role he also performs for a Pidgin English radio station, Naija FM 102.7. He's  a co-founder and executive director of Storm 360. His outstanding charisma, performances and vast experience within the industry has made him a brand name recognized not only in Nigeria, but across the continent.

Rising Star: PHRONESIS

Meet one of Naija up coming comedian,Chukwuemeka Emmanuel Ubido, fondly called Phronesis.
Phronesis is unique and outstanding, he is one of the few up coming comedians in Africa, that has great command of English Language, he is a very spontaneous, Intelligent and witty comedian.
He is currently studying Psychology at the prestigious University of Lagos. Just recently, he was qualified for Alibaba spontaneity, a show where you are asked to pick a topic on stage and make a joke out of it on the spot.
Emeka, has anchored sparsely a Large number of events from weddings, Book Launches, Company end of the year party, schools events, Birthdays. Trust me he is one comedian to get for your event!
Recently in an interview with Comedy Plus Magazine, Phronesis revealed his favourite Naija comedians, his aspiration, the secret behind his name and others.

How long have you been on stage?
5 years now. I started professionally 5 years ago

When did you discover your talent in comedy?
When I was in secondary school, in 2005. But went into it professionally in 2010. Obviously that was when I started getting paid.

In a sentence, describe yourself.
I am a very selfless Loving person with a big heart that accepts anybody, am also very flexible and can adapt to any situation.

What inspires you into going into comedy?
Love to see people happy, I get fulfilment from seeing people happy. It's a calling I believe I Love , I would have given up a long time ago, even my mum discouraged me at some point, but two things kept me going, God and Passion.

How did you come about the name phronesis?
I was the leader of a Drama team in a church sometime in 2007, and I formed a drama team called "Amazing Tekno" and our Aka was PHRONESIS Which was just a slogan and a name I added, That's how I imbibed the name, "PHRONESIS" And the origin of the name is Greek, And it means wisdom.

Your profile says you are currently studying Psychology, how do you intend to combine psychology with comedy?

Well life itself is psychological. The study of the human mind, how it works, the madness going on in the world. A comedian is a psychologist.

How?
Because what the intelligent ones do Is when they get to an event they study the people, understanding them, their background, religion before knowing the kind of joke that would work for them, So we study human behaviour in a way

Who are your Naija comedy role models?
They are Just three, Bovi: because his jokes are intelligent and political, Basket mouth: his jokes are punchy and knows no Bounds, Alibaba: all in all, witty, extremely intelligent, king of word play and of course spontaneity.

Every one now host comedy shows, when is yours coming up?
Well I have done comedy shows in the past, the last show I did was in 2014. And what I am heading to doing now is a one man comedy show where I will perform for maybe an hour or two, that's how comedy shows should be done

What challenges are you facing as an up coming comedian?
It's a challenge that everybody doing Business faces too,and that is financial challenge. but it's no Big deal because you still have to work it out, sometimes you want to do a project and you have to source for the whole resources

What are your aspiration?
To become one of the leading and renowned comedian Africa ever produced and to do tours in and out of Africa
