Naija Top RECORD LABEL III

Two weeks ago we started profiling Naija top record labels you need to know. Today, we have another two. Though not in  particular order, but these record labels are tremendously doing well in the industry, as talents are discovered and groomed by them.

 HKN
 HKN music record label Nigeria is owned and established by Davido  and his elder brother, Adewale Adeleke. HKN is also the sole recording label for all Davido’s music. Top Songs like; Gobe, One of a Kind, Aye and others. Adewale Adeleke, who happened to be one of the top manager of this record label revealed that he  invested his first $50k into the label and today,  Davido  makes over  $50,000 (N8 million) per show.

STARBOY ENTERTAINMENT
Starboy Entertainment record label is own by one of Nigerian newest music CEO, Wizkid. Although this  record label do not have very much artists signed to it, but it can boast of one highly sought-after Nigerian producer, Maleek Berry. Maleek Berry is a Nigerian UK based producer, he is responsible for such hits as Wizkid‘s “The Matter” & “Lagos To Soweto”, Wande Coal’s “My Way”, Davido’s “Video” & “Enter The Centre” and most notably, Sinuz "Carolina”. The label can actually be said to be with two artists only which are L.A.X and Wizkid himself.

McDow on the move

Here's one of Nigerian promising up coming act whose musical tune and lyrics will leave  you with no choice but to dance. Attah Moses Mark popularly called McDow is a graduate of the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi. Born to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Attah Samuel in the early 90s, he hails from Ibaji LGA of Kogi State. He started music since 2005 and since then, he has successfully established himself as an artist that can be comfortably said to be the next to blow, making music of diverse genres to which his fans from near and far have been able to easily relate to.
McDow has worked with so many acts too numerous to mention but he has also shared a stage with the likes of J Martins, Terry G, Ice Prince, Yung L, Eddie and others. Not long ago, he dropped a promo CD titled "Olivia Twist" which contains enough songs for you to tell us what you think about this amazing musician. Multiple Award Winner: KUNLE AFOLAYAN

Today we present to you one of Nigerian Award winning movie maker and actor, Kunle Afolayan. Kunle Afolayan born on 30th of  September 1974 is a Nigerian actor, film producer and director. Kunle Afolayan's originated from Igbomina-Yoruba from Kwara State,he's the son of the famous theater and film director cum producer Ade Love.
He majored in economics and started out working in a bank while doing some casual acting, before deciding to move into full-time film making and taking a course at the New York Film Academy. Since 2005 that he has been active in the Nigerian film industry; he has made several extremely popular titles including: The Figurine: Araromire which was in the Yoruba  and English languages and Phone Swap which featured Nse Ikpe Etim and the legendary Chika Okpala. The Figurine won five major awards in the African Film Academy and experienced tremendous success in the Nigerian movie theaters. Kunle appeared at the Subversive Film Festival in 2011 where he represented the second largest film industry in the world, the Nigerian film industry, with his colleague Zeb Ejiro. In May 2013, Phone Swap premiered in France at the first edition of Nollywood Week Paris and won the Public Choice Award. Talking about his personal life, Kunle is married to Tolu and they have 3 kids.

Naija Top RECORD LABEL II

In recent times, if you are not signed to a notable record label, your emergence into the industry is still in motion. Here are two of Nigerian top record label upcoming artist long to be belong.
Mavin Records
Owned and controlled by the Don Dorobucci of music himself, Don Jazzy, who has been able to carve a niche for himself in the social sphere, which keeps him relevant today. After successfully leading the now defunct MoHits Records, Don Jazzy set out to create something that people would not have thought possible at that stage in his career. The label is home to recording artistes such as Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, D’Prince, Di’ja, Reekado Banks and Korede Bello. The label also houses a roaster of producers such as Jazzy himself, Altims and Baby Fresh. Wande coal was formerly signed to the Label. As a matter of fact, Mavin records is one of Nigerian record label whose music never fade easily. 

Chocolate City
Chocolate City, founded in 2005 by Lawyer Audu Maikori along with Paul Okeugo and Yaxham Maikori.Today, MI Abaga still appears to stay relevant in the musical circle owing to the fact that he recently became the Chairman of Chocolate City after taking over from Audu Maikori. Chocolate City is generally regarded as one of the most biggest and most successful urban record labels in Africa. This record label operates as a subsidiary of Chocolate City group - one of the biggest entertainment conglomerates in Africa. Other arms of the group are Chocolate City Distribution, Chocolate City events and Chocolate City Media. The Label is home to recording artistes like MI, Femi Kuti, Ice Prince, Jesse jags, Dj Caise, Pryse, Nosa, Victoria Kimani, Dice, Ailes and Koker. Artistes formerly signed to the label include Jeremiah Gyang and Brymo. Chocolate City was the first Nigerian music company to attain a global music award and recognition by the British Council in 2007, International Young Music Entrepreneur of the year (IYMEY) 2007, and they bagged City People award for best record label in 2013 among others.

Alibaba's January 1 CONCERT

Personality of the week: ALIBABA

Our Personality of the week is Atunyota Alleluia Akporobomerere, fondly called by stage name, Alibaba. He is the father of Stand-up comedy in Nigeria and  one of the most sought after Nigerian stand-up comedian. Alibaba was born in Warri, Delta State, on June 24th 1965 to the Royal Family of Agbarha Otor, Ughelli North Local Government Area. The first son after several girls. He spent the first 8 years of his life in Warri. His father is a retired soldier who served in Lagos. Schooling therefore was at Ojo Primary School and Command Secondary School both in Lagos, he furthered his education at Ibru College in Agbarha-Otor and then went on to Bendel State University now known as the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma where he read Religious Studies & Philosophy. He discovered his comic talent in his 3rd year in University and relocated to Lagos after acquiring his degree.

He began his professional career with corporate events, appearing on television shows with the likes of Patrick Doyle, Charly Boy and Danladi Bako. He also made cameo appearances on radio shows with Bisi Olatilo, Sani Irabor and Mani Onumonmu. He also worked briefly with Dapo Adelegan of DP Lekki Limited as Executive Assistant in 1991. Having made up his mind to be a comedian with difference, Alibaba succeeded in carving a niche for himself as a comedian for both corporate and non-corporate events and in less than 4 years, he had also become the preferred Master of Ceremony at some events.

He was inducted into the Johnny Walker ‘Striding Man’ Society in 2009 which recognizes men who have achieved great strides in their chosen fields of endeavor and who share the strides they have taken to motivate and encourage others. In 2012, he was the first Nigerian Comedian to ring the Year End Closing Bell of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, he is also a Special Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps and was featured on CNN’s African voices in 2015. He won the Diamond Award For Comedy in 2008 for helping the growth & development of the Comedy Industry in Nigeria. In 2004 he won the 1st Nigeria Entertainment Awards as an Icon of comedy, in 2009 the City People Entertainment award for his invaluable contribution to the entertainment industry, he walked away as the comedian of the decade in 2009 at the National Daily Award. He was honoured by the Comedy for Change in commemoration of his 20 years on stage and the list is endless.
