A Man Of Many ROLES

Age they say "is just a number", it doesn't matter how long you've lived but how well. Kudos to a man whose life is a source of encouragement to others, a role model to many and a man of many roles - kudos to Uncle Olu popularly know as Olu Jacobs. Jacobs is one of the veterans of Nollywood, he is an International super star that has worked with International actors like Jean Claude Van Damme and has also become the favourite for elderly roles in Nigerian movies. Olu Jacobs biography shows that the veteran actor was born on the 11th of July, 1942 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, South West Nigeria.
Olu Jacobs age record shows that the highly revered actor is above 70 years old . He has starred in several British Television series aside featuring in many local and International movies. Like other young aspiring individuals of his age, Olu Jacobs and family issues nearly frustrated him out of pursuing his career as an actor, his father was against his decision to study Dramatic arts, and in 1964, he left the shores of Nigeria to pursue his dream in the United Kingdom. When Olu Jacobs came back to Nigeria in the early 1980s there were no home movies and artist fees were very low, he however formed a company where stage plays were the major entertainment drive before the advent of home movies.
Olu Jacob’s first major role was the production of a television series titles “Vigilante” that starred RMD and Mama D. His life in and outside the industry has been scandal free. He is married to Joke Silva, another prolific Nollywood actress who is regarded as the role model to younger actresses in the movie industry.
Uncle is a complete actor that can be called upon any time to act almost any kind of role and he'll perfectly fit in, that’s why we refer to him as a ‘man of many roles' .

Naija Top Female Producer and Actress

Despite her marital scandal, she remains strong in her career. History of Nollywood will not be complete without her name, you can't also mention Nigerian female movie producers without mentioning the name 'Funke Akindele'. Akindele Olufunke Ayotunde  popularly known as Funke Akindele  was born 24th of Augus, 1977 in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. She is a Lagos based Nigerian actress and movie producer. Akindele worked in television before switching to cinema, becoming known for her starring role in the family - oriented Nigerian television show 'I Need to Know'. Her qualifications include an OND in Mass Communication from the Ogun State Polytechnic and a Law degree from the Lagos State University. To her credit, she has written and produced over a 100 movies.

Her name, Funke Akindele became a household name in Nigeria when she produced one of her popular movie titled 'JENIFA' in 2009 which is making waves all over Nigeria. In addition came the THE RETURN OF JENIFA and in 2015 came the hilarious Television series JENIFA'S DIARY, showing on terrestrial Television stations in Nigeria (Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Silverbird Television (STV), African Independent Television (AIT)). Funke Akindele also runs a non-governmental Organisation known as THE JENIFA FOUNDATION, this involves nuturing talent and acquiring vocational skills. Other movies to her credit includes MAAMI, MARRIED BUT LIVING SINGLE, Compound Fool. The movie also stars other A-list Nollywood actors and actresses like Yul Edochie, Kenneth Okonkwo, Queen Nwokoye, Moyo Lawal, Zubby Michaels and a host of others. In 2009 she won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and also has other awards to her credit.

The  event was graced by Klink D Drunk, musicians, Inyene Victoria and other bloggers. The couple had their traditional marriage in Okija, Anambra State August last year.
The highlight of the event was when the blogger displayed disc jockey skills with her husband in the reception which took place at Christmas Hall, Olambe.

Comedian with a STANDARD Record

Kudos to our own talented stand up comedian and actor whose talent and hard work earned him even more than he imagined.  He had a very humble and unassuming start, parlaying his charm and talent to a successful career in the Nigerian comedy scene. He is known  as Ayo Makun, popular called AY. He gained fame through impersonating Rev. Chris Okotie in his hilarious jokes. When he began in 2006,  he  was named the Best Up-Coming Comedian in Nigeria. Comedian AY holds an enviable record of being the first student to direct a convocation production in the history of the Theatre Arts Department of the Delta State University, where he graduated in 2003. In his campus days, he received many awards including: The Most Fashionable Student on Campus (1999 and 2000); The Most Celebrated Student on Campus (2001), Best Showbiz Promoter (2001), Jaycee Club Socio-Cultural Personality Award (2003), and The Most Celebrated Theatre Arts Student (2003).

Today, AY has become the ‘father’ of many upcoming acts and established acts that are doing well in the industry, through the then monthly AY’s Open Mic Challenge that holds every third Sunday, at The National Theatre, Lagos. He hosts (across the country) the usually out-sold comedy and music concerts AY Live. Twice, AY Live has broken and set enviable record standards in comedy events in Nigeria. In 2007, he held Lagos spell bound when the second edition of AY Live, Lagos Invasion drew a record crowd forcing him to do two shows instead of one, as planned. Two years later, similar feat was re-enacted in Nigeria’s Federal Capital City, when AY Live, Abuja Invasion stood Abuja still, and becoming Abuja’s most attended entertainment events ever. The AY Show, arguably is one of the best Comedy Show on Nigeria TV, showing on AYTV which airs daily on HITV across the country and all over Europe winning BEST TV Comedy SHOW in 2008, and has since been a must watch. Ayo Makun in 2009 was awarded UN Peace Ambassador after winning six different awards in 2008, all confirming one same thing: "COMEDIAN OF YEAR". In 2014 A.Y wrote and produced a movie titled "30 days in Atlanta" movie which before released has got many Nigerians attention. Shot in the U.S and also got many nominations before release. AY's YouTube page was said to have been the most viewed comedian channel on YouTube. He married Mabel in 2008 and they are blessed with a daughter, Michelle.

Two weeks ago we started profiling Naija top record labels you need to know. Today, we have another two. Though not in  particular order, but these record labels are tremendously doing well in the industry, as talents are discovered and groomed by them.

 HKN
 HKN music record label Nigeria is owned and established by Davido  and his elder brother, Adewale Adeleke. HKN is also the sole recording label for all Davido’s music. Top Songs like; Gobe, One of a Kind, Aye and others. Adewale Adeleke, who happened to be one of the top manager of this record label revealed that he  invested his first $50k into the label and today,  Davido  makes over  $50,000 (N8 million) per show.

STARBOY ENTERTAINMENT
Starboy Entertainment record label is own by one of Nigerian newest music CEO, Wizkid. Although this  record label do not have very much artists signed to it, but it can boast of one highly sought-after Nigerian producer, Maleek Berry. Maleek Berry is a Nigerian UK based producer, he is responsible for such hits as Wizkid‘s “The Matter” & “Lagos To Soweto”, Wande Coal’s “My Way”, Davido’s “Video” & “Enter The Centre” and most notably, Sinuz "Carolina”. The label can actually be said to be with two artists only which are L.A.X and Wizkid himself.

McDow on the move

Here's one of Nigerian promising up coming act whose musical tune and lyrics will leave  you with no choice but to dance. Attah Moses Mark popularly called McDow is a graduate of the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi. Born to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Attah Samuel in the early 90s, he hails from Ibaji LGA of Kogi State. He started music since 2005 and since then, he has successfully established himself as an artist that can be comfortably said to be the next to blow, making music of diverse genres to which his fans from near and far have been able to easily relate to.
McDow has worked with so many acts too numerous to mention but he has also shared a stage with the likes of J Martins, Terry G, Ice Prince, Yung L, Eddie and others. Multiple Award Winner: KUNLE AFOLAYAN

Today we present to you one of Nigerian Award winning movie maker and actor, Kunle Afolayan. Kunle Afolayan born on 30th of  September 1974 is a Nigerian actor, film producer and director. Kunle Afolayan's originated from Igbomina-Yoruba from Kwara State,he's the son of the famous theater and film director cum producer Ade Love.
He majored in economics and started out working in a bank while doing some casual acting, before deciding to move into full-time film making and taking a course at the New York Film Academy. Since 2005 that he has been active in the Nigerian film industry; he has made several extremely popular titles including: The Figurine: Araromire which was in the Yoruba  and English languages and Phone Swap which featured Nse Ikpe Etim and the legendary Chika Okpala. The Figurine won five major awards in the African Film Academy and experienced tremendous success in the Nigerian movie theaters. Kunle appeared at the Subversive Film Festival in 2011 where he represented the second largest film industry in the world, the Nigerian film industry, with his colleague Zeb Ejiro. In May 2013, Phone Swap premiered in France at the first edition of Nollywood Week Paris and won the Public Choice Award. Talking about his personal life, Kunle is married to Tolu and they have 3 kids.

In recent times, if you are not signed to a notable record label, your emergence into the industry is still in motion. Here are two of Nigerian top record label upcoming artist long to be belong.

Mavin Records

Owned and controlled by the Don Dorobucci of music himself, Don Jazzy, who has been able to carve a niche for himself in the social sphere, which keeps him relevant today. After successfully leading the now defunct MoHits Records, Don Jazzy set out to create something that people would not have thought possible at that stage in his career. The label is home to recording artistes such as Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, D’Prince, Di’ja, Reekado Banks and Korede Bello. The label also houses a roaster of producers such as Jazzy himself, Altims and Baby Fresh. Wande coal was formerly signed to the Label. Chocolate City is generally regarded as one of the most biggest and most successful urban record labels in Africa. This record label operates as a subsidiary of Chocolate City group - one of the biggest entertainment conglomerates in Africa. Other arms of the group are Chocolate City Distribution, Chocolate City events and Chocolate City Media. The Label is home to recording artistes like MI, Femi Kuti, Ice Prince, Jesse jags, Dj Caise, Pryse, Nosa, Victoria Kimani, Dice, Ailes and Koker. Artistes formerly signed to the label include Jeremiah Gyang and Brymo. Chocolate City was the first Nigerian music company to attain a global music award and recognition by the British Council in 2007, International Young Music Entrepreneur of the year (IYMEY) 2007, and they bagged City People award for best record label in 2013 among others.

Personality of the week: ALIBABA

Our Personality of the week is Atunyota Alleluia Akporobomerere, fondly called by stage name, Alibaba. He is the father of Stand-up comedy in Nigeria and  one of the most sought after Nigerian stand-up comedian. Alibaba was born in Warri, Delta State, on June 24th 1965 to the Royal Family of Agbarha Otor, Ughelli North Local Government Area. The first son after several girls. He spent the first 8 years of his life in Warri. His father is a retired soldier who served in Lagos. Schooling therefore was at Ojo Primary School and Command Secondary School both in Lagos, he furthered his education at Ibru College in Agbarha-Otor and then went on to Bendel State University now known as the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma where he read Religious Studies & Philosophy. He discovered his comic talent in his 3rd year in University and relocated to Lagos after acquiring his degree.

He began his professional career with corporate events, appearing on television shows with the likes of Patrick Doyle, Charly Boy and Danladi Bako. He also made cameo appearances on radio shows with Bisi Olatilo, Sani Irabor and Mani Onumonmu. He also worked briefly with Dapo Adelegan of DP Lekki Limited as Executive Assistant in 1991. Having made up his mind to be a comedian with difference, Alibaba succeeded in carving a niche for himself as a comedian for both corporate and non-corporate events and in less than 4 years, he had also become the preferred Master of Ceremony at some events.

He was inducted into the Johnny Walker ‘Striding Man’ Society in 2009 which recognizes men who have achieved great strides in their chosen fields of endeavor and who share the strides they have taken to motivate and encourage others. In 2012, he was the first Nigerian Comedian to ring the Year End Closing Bell of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, he is also a Special Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps and was featured on CNN’s African voices in 2015. He won the Diamond Award For Comedy in 2008 for helping the growth & development of the Comedy Industry in Nigeria. In 2004 he won the 1st Nigeria Entertainment Awards as an Icon of comedy, in 2009 the City People Entertainment award for his invaluable contribution to the entertainment industry, he walked away as the comedian of the decade in 2009 at the National Daily Award. He was honoured by the Comedy for Change in commemoration of his 20 years on stage and the list is endless.

Capital Hill is a renowned record label in Nigeria founded by arguably the best music video director in Nigeria, Clarence Peters. He is partnered by 'oga boss' himself, Illbliss, with his Gorretti Company. It houses artiste like Tha suspect, Chidinma, Illbliss and Ayoola. The artiste formerly signed to the label was sensational female rapper, Kel. But parted ways with the Label when a misunderstanding arose between she and Peters. All the act on this label are forces to reckon with in the industry, and the artiste leading the fore-front of the label is non other than Chidinma

Personality of the week: DON JAZZY

Although not acknowledging himself as a recording artist, he is responsible for doing most background vocals for artists he produces, and sometimes sings complete verses. His musical dexterity can be heard through his beats and well calculated vocals. That's why today, we at Comedy+ Magazine  crowns him as the Personality of the week. Michael Collins Ajebo popularly better known as Don Jazzy, is a Nigerian multi award-winning record producer, singer-songwriter, musician, former CEO of Mo' Hits Records and current CEO of Mavin Records. Don Jazzy who was born in Umuahia in Abia state, alongside his friend and partner  (Dbanj) they created the Mohits record label.

Don Jazzy's first full credit production work was in 2004 on Tongolo for Nigerian singerD'banj. He went on to produce D'banj's first studio album titled No Long Thing released in 2005. He has produced tracks for some of our well known music stars like; Dr SID, Wande Coal, Emeka Infiniti, D'Prince, Darey, Naeto C,Olakunle Excel et Zanga, Sauce Kid,Ikechukwu & Tiwa Savage. He also collaborated with Jay-Z and Kanye West on the production of Lift Off, featuring Beyoncéon the album Watch The Throne, released on 8 August 2011. He recently was rated as the 39th "Most powerful celebrity in Africa" according to Forbes. However, after 8 years of hard work and struggles to set up the Mo' Hits label, around March 2012, there was rumours of irreconcilable differences between the label heads which till date has not been resolved. Later in the year,on 7 May Don Jazzy kept his promise of a new beginning, taking to Twitter to announce his new Record Label known asMavin Records and further promised to release a compilation album of the label artists the very next day. The signing of Savage, one of Nigeria's leading vocalists, is seen as a major coup for the budding record label and Don Jazzy promised fans that there are many more exciting faces to be "activated" by the label in the near future. The label boasts an addition of Tiwa Savageto part of the former members of Mo' Hits Records who is now the label first lady, with a promise of more addition of "Mavins" in the near-future. On 5 November 2013, he had a cold fight with his former label act wande over stolen of music production from him. While on 7 November, his record label released official statement of Wande Coal departure from the label. In September 2014, Don Jazzy calls on Reekado Banks and Di'Ja for "Arise" dedicated to Nigeria. This is a clarion call to all Nigerians to wake up!!!

Book Launch: QUITTING IGNORANCE

Ignorance is a state of being uninformed (lack of knowledge and information). Ignoramus on the other hand is someone who is willfully ignorant. Adage has it that "anything  not known by man is actually greater than man himself" Since ignorance is not just a blank space on a person's mental map, it has contours and coherences that affects his decisions. This however stimulated the author Mayor Oluwafemi Osunleti to write this highly informative and educated book aimed at tackling humanity greatest obstacle.
