Personality of the week: ASA

Music they say is life, as it elevate the soul, bring to memories of what life was, is and should be. Asa is one of Nigerian artist whose style of music is a  relieve to the soul of many. Born Bukola Elements known as Aṣa (pronounced "Asha"), born on the 17th of September 1982; she's a Nigerian French singer, songwriter, and recording artist. Her stage name "Aṣa" means " Hawk " in Yoruba. Aṣa was born in Paris, France to her Nigerian parents. Her family returned to live in Nigeria when she was two. Though she grew up in in a small town near Lagos, in the south-western part of Nigeria,  Asa returned twenty years later to Paris where her life as an artist took off. Asa being the only female in the mix of three boys, at a young age was challenged with the responsibility of  looking after the house during her parents' frequent absences. This,  led to her self discovery. As she drew her inspiration from her father's collection of records featuring soul, classics and Nigerian music, including Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin , King Sunny Adé  and Ebenezer Obey. In 2004 Aṣa met her manager and friend, Janet, who introduced her to Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo, who in turn became her musical partner and producer. At this stage, Aṣa returned to Paris. Back in Nigeria, her first single, "Eyé Adaba," then "Jailer," were beginning to get air play. Aṣa soon signed to Naïve Records partnered with Cobhams, and with the new involvement of Christopher Dupouy, she produced her first album, Asa. The release of the album, led her into wining the prestigious French Constantin Award in 2008, where she was voted best fresh talent of 10 singers or groups by a jury of 19 music-industry specialists in Paris.

Her second album, "Beautiful Imperfection" was released on 25 October 2010. The lead single from Beautiful Imperfection is titled "Be My Man" and was released in late September. A video for the song was released in mid - October. She also performed with Féfé at the Sydney Festival in 2011. Asa who became an artist in Lagos is clearly one of the most exciting artists to have emerged in the last decade. She’s highly in-demand by festivals across the world and radios (with taste!) are giving her a special place on their playlist.

Brand Ambassador Comedians II

Last week we started profiling some Naija comedian telecommunication brand ambassadors who has made their way to the top. Today we unveil another two, Akpororo and Basketmouth.

Akpororo
Jephthah Bowoto popularly known as Akpororo is an Ilaje-born Warri Boy. His journey to the Comedy greatness was a long and winding one. But it lead to his destiny. Akpororo in June 2015,was announced by one of the leading Telecommunications service provider, Airtel Nigeria, as brand ambassador among other personalities like; TuFace, Patoranking, Phyno and others. Renowned, on-the-rise comedian, Akpororo, is regarded as someone with very strong work ethic and his passion for comedy has earned him so many accolades. He also sponsors a football competition as a way of supporting talented youths in his community.

Basketmouth

More than any other Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth(Bright Okpocha) remains the toast of many reputable brands in Nigeria. He is the brand ambassador of the leading telecommunications company Globacom. To top it all, he is the CEO of Barons World Entertainment which organizes shows in Nigeria and abroad.

Rising Star: Mc MEKUS

Emeka Ihesiaba Wisdom aka Mc Mekus started comedy in 2011 but took it serious as a career in 2013, he was the 1st runner up of the Ideal Personality Gospel Comedy Open Mic competition in 2014 a show which was proudly sponsored by MTN and Diamond Bank.

The Imo breath comedian who hosted his first show march this year featuring arts  like Ajele, Princewill, Koloman, Ajebo,Dpo, Laff Doctor, Baba De baba, Pamtop, Boy of God, Ty Jokez, Dare justified, Blinx Cavalli and others graced the occasion..Indeed he  is rising as a star as he has performed in some remarkable events like Laugh Therapy with Princewill, Uninterrupted with Babahkay,Thoughts of Openteeth with comedians like Akpororo, Acapella, Emeka Smith, Ajebo, Mc Shakara and a host of others

Mc Mekus who just finished his OND program studied Shipping Management and Technology in a Maritime institution in  Lagos while he was in school he served as the comic editor of the press club.

Mc Mekus was recently featured in a movie titled"my mom my pride" a movie that featured A list entertainers in the industry.

Indeed he is a rising star.

Oldies: SADIQ DABA

Certainly,  not everyone remembers the name "Sadiq Daba" but if you were born between 80s and 90s when ‘Things Fall Apart” and “Rooster Crow At Dawn" was the hit of the year, then you will have no reason not to remember one of the strong character behind "roaster crown at dawn" - Sadiq Daba. Sadiq Daba is a veteran TV broadcaster, Presenter, Actor, Director and Producer who wowed Nigerians from the late 70s through the 80s and 90s. His performances were instrumental in the birth of contemporary Nollywood. He starred in myriads of films, soap operas and drama like; 'Rooster Crow at Dawn’, ‘Behind the Clouds’, ‘A Place like Home’, ‘Soweto’, and ‘Moment of Truth’.
Widely traveled and educated, he studied at the St. Edwards College, Sierra Leone, NTA/TV College, and later went on training tours to Germany, U.K. et al. He was a news reader, reporter, editor at RKTV (Radio Television Kaduna), NTV/NTA Sokoto, NTPC Lagos, NTA Lagos.

Though he's been below the radar for a while, but we still adore his performances. In 2013,he popped up as the hero of 'arguably' the most anticipated movie of the year; 'October 1st'. He plays a character called ‘Waziri’ a Police Detective who’s charged with the responsibility of apprehending a serial feminist murderer in precolonial Nigeria.
Talking about how he went into acting,  he said: “I gradually worked towards my dream every day of my life, hoping that one day it will come through. And I am glad it did. As far as acting is concerned, it started way back in Sokoto with Peter Igho from the newsroom; I was a news reporter, presenter and then a news producer.Peter who was then the head of drama decided to drag me into it and we did so many drama productions in Sokoto. Somewhere along the line, 'Cockcrow at Dawn' was born and we decided to run it as a series and surprisingly it turned out to be a big hit,” he informed.
As part of his consultancy services since his retirement, Daba has produced a programme called Soul of Highlife — which took him to different countries such as Sierria Leone and Ghana — where he spoke to highlife music legends.

Personality of the week: GORDONS

Having gone through his biography,  with all pleasure we present to you Godwin Komone.  

Godwin Komone popularly known as Gordons,  is one Nigerian comedian who has contributed significantly to the comedy industry. 

He is from Urhobo Delta state and an Integrated Science graduate of  Delta State University (DELSU). 

Gordon's biography reveals that his motive for coming into the comedy industry was to make an impact by doing something different to create a niche for myself.                                          firstly,  he realized that comedy then was all about entertainment without education so he decided to bring a little bit of education into entertainment thereby creating psycho-comedy that will make people laugh and also make them  think. 

Godwin who has been married for over a decade now used to be part of the popular Made-in-Warri show, a brand owned by nollywoood super star, Richard Mofe-Damijo. While managing this show, Gordon earned the respect of being the first entertainer to have brought a foreign comedian, China Demos to perform in Nigeria. He also discovered young talents that featured in the show.

Gordon who hopes to become a brand ambassador base on the opportunities it provides has performed on Nigerian prominent platforms like the Made-in-Warri show, Presidency, an event had in attendance notable personalities within and outside the shore of Nigeria.

Faces we've missed V

This week again, we bring to you another two nollywood actors and actresses we have not seen in our recent home video.

Benita Nzeribe
Benita Nzeribe who has carved a niche for herself. In the industry started out as a teen star in Nollywood and later grew into adulthood long before the industry started experiencing the boom it now enjoys.

Benita who hails from Ihiala, Anambra State, back in the day was an ambassador to Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA),she also was starred in a Television commercial for the agency. Organized by the MD of the agency, Engineer Nnamdi Udoh, the TV commercial was shot at the Murtala Mohammed Airport.

She was starred in over 100 movies like; Sugar Boy, Girls cot, beyond our dreams, the one I trust and others. 

John Njama,
John Njama being the first born child in a family of five had his elementary education at Nigerian Navy Primary School in Lagos before he moved to Methodist College Nzeakoli. After his elementary education, he went further to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife to study Dramatic Arts.

This Indigine of Njaaba in Oru local Government of Imo State, is not just an actor but also an artiste and a producer whose work cuts across movie and television.

Njama started his acting career at a tender stage and has done some stage productions. He started with a local group called MONIDEX. After a brief stay with the group, he went to Chuck Mike's Collective Artistes where he had major productions.

Between 1989 - 1991, john had his first television production which was a children adventure series on the NTA Network belt. It was during one of his television shows that Amaka Igwe saw him and invited him to be part of Checkmate.

In 1991, John started his professional theatre career effectively.

Being a director and an actor, John has directed several stage plays like, Moremi, The Militant Preacher, Behold My Redeemer and others too numerous to remember. He was also the unit director of Fuji House Of Commotion, director of Laugh Patterns and so many other productions and for home videos. He has done quite a sizeable number of movies too, like Wicked Contact, Blast from the past, Dusty love and others.

John Njama's first professional award was a Hubert Ogunde Foundation Award for the best young actor, then in Port-Harcourt, and the Most Dynamic Actor Award. He was also nominated for the Best Supporting Actor severally and even for Best director and so on.

Personality of the week: KISS DANIEL

His performances and current awards has left us with no option than to crown him the personality of the week.
Kiss Daniels popularly known as Anidugbe Oluwatobiloba Daniel is one Nigerian artist whom we can loudly say is currently making weaves in the industry. He is an Afro-pop singer-songwriter,performer and entertainer best known for his chart-topping single "Woju".
Daniel is a graduate of Water Resources Management and Agrometeorology (Water Engineering)from federal university of agriculture, Abeokuta. While in university, he decided to pursue music as a career alongside his studies.
He started his music career professionally 2013 after his tertiary education, when he came across G-Worldwide Entertainment CEO, Emperor Geezy. After being signed to G-Worldwide entertainment, he released his first official single "Shoye" which was produced by Beatburx on May 1, 2014, along with a music video was directed by MEX. Daniel released his second single "Woju", produced by Dj Coublon on September 1, 2014. The video for Woju, released by Adasa Cookey, was shot in Lagos, Nigeria. The song spent eleven weeks on the MTV Base Official Naija Top Ten, including six weeks at the number one spot.

Daniel also recorded and released a remix of "Woju" featuring Tiwa Savage and Davido. "Woju" and its remix peaked at Number 1 and Number 2 respectively on the MTV Base Official Naija Top 10, the first time that an original song and its remix would peak at the first and second positions on the chart.
In May 2015, Daniel released a third follow up single "Laye" on his birthday, along with a video two weeks later which was shot in different locations in eastern part of Africa and was directed by AJE FILMS.
In September 2015, Daniel won two awards within the space of three weeks.
He is currently signed to G-Worldwide Entertainment.

Our rising star for the week is Daniel Chibueze Iheukwumere popularly known as Danypraize.

He is an international gospel music minister, a worshipper, whose passion is to the to reach and minister to the world with good and spirit filled songs.
He has been previleged to ministere in some prominent platform in and and outside the country.

This Lagos based Abia state indigine from Eluama Isuikwato Local government to be precised, has shared the same platforms with the likes of Midnightcrew, buchi , Lara George, pastor Kunle ajayi, wole Oni to mention but a few, he has collaborated with great ministers too like Pat Uwaje King of Midnightcrew, psalmos, bukola bekes, Akpororo, to mention but a few.

Faces we've MISSED IV

There absence left us with nothing but memories of their roles, indeed we miss them. Here are two other nollywood stars we've missed on our recent home videos.

Hilda Dokubo

Hilda Dokubo was born as Hilda Dokubo Mrakpor. She is an actress, known for Black Maria, End of the Wicked and Onye-Eze. Hilda hails from Buguma in Asari Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
She is a graduate of Theatre Arts from University of Port Harcourt, where she also acquired her masters degree in Theatre Education.

Few years ago, she left the industry not for politics but to give back to the society by working with young people. While in her duty, she was appointed as Special Adviser (SA) to the former governor of
Rivers state, Governor Peter Odili.

Hilda Dokubo also runs a Non-Governmental Organisation, NGO, which uses creative arts to improve the
lives of the young people in the society.
She is married with two sons

Charles Okafor


Charles Ezechukwu Okafor who is the fourth in a family of six hails from Umuleri in Anambra State. He is a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Port Harcourt.
 
Just like Oliver Twist always want some more, the Promising Charles proceeded to the University of Lagos to pursue a masters degree in Political Science and International.
While working at Security & Exchange Commission, he featured in a Soap Opera tagged "MemorialHospital" which he played a lead role. He has since then, featured in many popular Nollywood films amongst which includes; Lost Kingdom 1 & 2,End of Wicked, Conspiracy, Mothering Sunday,King of forest, Blood Billionaire, Executive Connection. Across the River, Forest of Promises and others.

Aside what he's known for, he has contributed immensely to the development of Nigeria Movie Industry as Director and Producer of various movies through his Outfit called C&E Production. As a Producer, he has directed and produced these popular films: Ocean Deep 1&2, Sting 1&2 and many others.

Personality of the week: FEMI KUTI

Talking about entertainment oldies, Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti, popularly known as Femi Kuti, is a Nigerian afro beat singer whose style of music is unique.
Femi was born on the 16th of June 1962, born in London and raised in Lagos. He is the eldest son of afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. and a grandchild of a political campaigner, women's rights activist and traditional aristocrat Funmilayo Ransome Kuti.

Femi Kuti's musical career started when he began playing in his father's band, Egypt 80. In 1986, Femi started his own band, Positive Force, and began establishing himself as an artist independent of his father's massive legacy.

Just as his biography reveals, Femi's first record was released in 1995 by Tabu/Motown, followed four years later by Shoki Shoki (MCA), which garnered widespread critical acclaim. In 2001 he collaborated with Common Mos Def and Jaguar Wright on Fight to Win, an effort to cross over to a mainstream audience, and started touring the United States with Jane’s Addiction. In 2004 he opened The Shrine, his club, where he recorded the live album Africa Shrine. After a 4-year absence due to personal setbacks, he re-emerged in 2008 with Day by Day and Africa for Africa in 2010, for which he received two Grammy nominations. In 2012 he was both inducted into the Headies Hall of Fame (the most prestigious music awards in Nigeria), was the opening act on the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ European arena tour and became an Ambassador for Amnesty International. Like his father, Femi has shown a strong commitment to social and political causes throughout his career. He has been nominated for a Grammy award four times in the world music category in 2003, 2010, 2012 and 2013 but has never won.
