With the volume of comedians and entertainers in Nigeria, it can be really hard to stand out but every once in a while you come across an act that is not only funny but also unique and to top it all up the act embraces a traditional form of comedy.

Meet STILLRINGING, arguably Nigeria's foremost Comedy duo who utilize a unique style of a preacher and interpreter brand of comedy, who riff off each other and the interpretations result in extremely funny situations. The impressive duo whose real names are Ojo Oladipupo Daniels & Ogunsina Ayodeji Samuel. Question: First major entry show or event and how it affected your career?

Answer: That was Comedy Goes 2 Church with Acapella, it brought us recognition particularly within the industry & the media. Meanwhile before then, we had graced several church platforms amongst which was Living Faith Church Worldwide aka Winners Chapel with a 50,000 capacity audience although we would rather not regard it as a major show.

Question: Your brand of performance is very unique.... comedians once in a while team up to do it occasionally but you have made it your signature and striving with it. What has been the Sustaining factor of your success?

Answer: Grace is what sustains along with the drive to be unique. Lagos has a comedy industry with the highest competitiveness with so many stand up comedians around town. So the question is, how do we come up & get noticed out of the entire pack? Come up with a Brand that is unique & stay stubborn with it.

Question: How has working as a team of 2 people affected your outings, schedule and engagement?

Answer: It’s easy. We live together, plan our schedule & move together to events except in cases where we had to anchor two separate events as two separate MCs.

Question: If you were to make recommendations for other comedians (upcoming or already established comedians), what would be your recommendation?

Answer: Our recommendation remains the same. We came into this industry to add value, spice & variety to what was already on the table, not precisely because we saw how much money Alibaba made from it. So to colleagues who have been there over the years & the ones who are new in the field, please strive always to add value by thinking out your own jokes rather than steal intellectual properties & polish your skills so you don't ruin people's events & shame our industry.

Comedy+ Celebrates CeeY

Today is the birthday of fast rising comedian CeeY, hoat of the Standing Out With CeeY and popularly called 'The Richest Calabar Man'. In honour of his birthday, below is an interview we had with the in demand comedian:

Who is CeeY?
My real name is Kingsley Edem Oba, graduate of Theatre arts from the Lagos State University, I am an actor, dancer, singer, OAP, comedian and compere. I am also the Music director of Passover Chapel. I have acted as a compere for companies like; UAC, First Bank, Oando, Mobil etc. I am also the host of Standing Out With CeeY, a personal show which has been ongoing for 3 years now and Standing Out with CeeY Church Tour, I also performed at the MNET Comedy Club Lagos, Uganda, Kenya and Standup Nigeria.

What prompted comedy?
Not hunger but from my days in school I was always eager to feature in anything entertainment. Even From my primary school days. I was always the Joker of the house while living with Sen. Florence Ita-Giwa for 13 years of my life. My first ever performance was in a church wearing slippers after which i was invited and paid N700 later N1,000.

Sustaining factor?
Drive, passion and love for the job.Love and drive pushed me even when things were not on point.

Challenges faced?
People taking advantage of you, people not believing you or in you, for example my mum and uncle who said there are no jobs 4 theatre art graduates

Breakout performance at the Nite of a 1000 laughs in 2010

AY LIVE LIVES UP TO EXPECTATION

The 2015 edition of AY Live, fast becoming a strong contender for Nigeria’s premier comedy showcase, took place at the Eko Hotel and Suites on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015 and lasted till the early hours of Monday. 

AY (real name Ayo Makun), said a lot of efforts were made in featuring some of the nation’s best entertainers at the annual comedy and music show and the efforts showed. The event saw a host of several A-list celebrities storm the Maltina-sponsored comedy/music concert. Some of the ubiquitous stars included Uti Nwachukwu, Yomi Casual, IK Ogbonna, Funke Akindele, Vector, Okey Bakassi, Gbenro Ajibade, Osas Ighodaro, Ubi Franklin, Lilian Esoro, Freeze, Jimmy Jatt, Kenneth Okolie, Kiss Daniel, Lilian Afegbai, Betty Irabor, Toyin Aimakhu-Johnson, Yaw, and Yibo Koko and several others. Comedian AY seemed especially pleased with this year’s event, naming this year’s outing one of the best since the history of the event. 

There were musical performances from the incomparable legend Onyeka Onwenu, who took guests down memory lane with some of her evergreen hits. Hers was a particular highlight of the night. Other musical performers were‎ Sexy Steel, Vector, Korede Bello, Lil Kesh, Kiss Daniel, Xplicit Dance Crew, Camerounian Makossa star- Awilo Longomba, Phyno and MC Galaxy.

AY headlined the comedy aspect of the event, in addition to sharing co-hosting duties for the event with Cool FM On-Air Personality, Freeze. Other comedians at the evenet were ‎Laff Up, Mc Shakara, Still Ringing, I Go Dye, Ushbebe, Acapella, Akpororo, Seyi Law, Helen Paul, Princess and Funnybone.

The show also gave a nod to the recently concluded general presidential elections and gave kudos to the outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan during his set, AY urged everyone to give a round of applause to Jonathan, stating that he is the reason the event could hold in peace today, He said ‘Goodluck is a true epitome of what a statesman should be, and a real reflection of the change this country needs. He put the peace and wellbeing of this country before his ambition, and I can liken him to Jesus Christ today who sacrificed himself for us all and resurrected today,’ AY stated. And the crowded hall complied with AY to give Goodluck Jonathan a standing ovation....

Needless to say the event was a resounding success. The AY Live series will continue with the Port Harcourt and Abuja legs billed to hold later in the year.

"Hey" said the elephant to Mr Lion, "This guy is only trying to help us from taking drugs, why are you beating him up?" Then the lion said, "Don't mind this idiot! That's how he makes me run around the forest with him whenever he's high!

Otuoke Is That Way

Oh Otuoke, Roll out the red carpet for your son returns and to paraphrase the immortal words of his wife ‘No be only him waka come’. The tenure of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is coming to an end. Say what you will about the man and I am not here to bash him or his tenure, I’ll leave that to you dear reader. I am here to celebrate the end of one of the most wilding entertaining pantomime villains in the history of Nigeria, the Incomparable Dame Patience. She was funny without even trying or knowing. We have all made fun of her and her sayings. Her catch phrases are the stuff of legend and will never be forgotten whether she is reminding us of our creator (Dearis God o), or just reminding you of your civic duty (Pless ya hand) or just random nuggets of comedy gold, ‘na only you waka come’ (my personal favourite) or giving a new pronunciation to umbrella, she is the inadvertent source of comedy that just keeps on giving. And now with her husband’s tenure coming to an end, I for one will miss her wildly reckless statements.
The good thing is that whilst Dame always made us laugh, the laughter was more often than not, never for the right reasons and now Nigerians have spoken and it is our earnest hope that the decision we have made to elect General Buhari as the next president of this great republic, will make us laugh regularly for all the right reasons; just as this blogsite aspires to do. The Comedy Industry will badly miss Dame Patience Jonathan!!! God bless Nigeria
